You’re doing awesome! You’re posting content and you’re staying consistent but you’re not seeing engagement and the prepared posts your company or your franchiser has given you only promote products and services. How do you step up your game and what tools do you need to enhance your posting strategies. When working to engage the algorithms of different social platforms, there is no silver bullet. What’s important is to think creatively about what is important to your audience and how to engage their interests on your channels. Here are 3 tips to help you increase your reach with organic social media.
- Follow the 80/20 Rule!
Often times, business owners or sales people for an organization, post about what they know, which is their business and their products and services. In reality, many consumers just don’t care! What’s important to consumers on a social channel can vary from articles about how to increase their productivity to simply engaging images that distract from their day to day in their business. A key to follow, is that at the very least, make sure that 80% of your content that you post is a value add to the audience you are trying to reach. Whether this is a piece related to thought leadership in your or your potential customer’s industry or something completely off topic, customers want to know and see that you are human and that you care about what’s important to them. If you follow the 80/20 rule and sprinkle in your “asks” or hard sells 20% of the time you’ll see much stronger engagement from your audience. You may even decide that a channel isn’t for sales it’s simply for building your thought leadership.
- Create Actual Organic Content!
This is critical for not only building your audience base but for feeding the algorithms inside social media platforms. Sure, posting or reposting relevant articles or content from others is huge and big part of staying up to date in the marketplace, however, channels like LinkedIn reward you for using their “Articles” feature, just like you’re reading now, or for posting your own blog article or podcast link. Social channels are hungry for new and relevant organic content and when you consistently provide this content to their channel you begin to train their algorithm to favor your posts which in turn boosts your entire network and your engagement overall. In addition, just like the social channels, your followers or users within your network, will start to be accustomed to and hungry for your content. This may take time time and there’s no magic bullet, but if you are consistent you can train your audience to see value in your content mix over time.
- Consistency is Critical!
This is perhaps the biggest challenge I see business owners or sales people have when it comes to building an organic social media presence. It’s common for it to be a new week, month or quarter and the word has gone out that this is the time we take control and not let 6 months go by between postings! Inevitably, life happens, contracts come in, and social media engagement takes a back seat as it’s seen as a “low priority” or “low ROI” activity for sales people. Nothing could be further from the truth. Organic social media posting and engagement is your ground game. Cold calls, prospecting efforts and networking is your passing game. You won’t have much success winning championships without either. And if you’re a defense wins championships guy or gal, that’s your customer service. Just sticking to a content calendar and posting on a regular basis following the 80/20 rule will do wonders for your profile engagement and your overall visibility in the marketplace. Following these steps will help you to hurdle the competition in the social landscape and remain top of mind for your customers when they do indeed need or want your product or service.
